Polish Bread Basket
Weave an elegant, simple tray to decorate your festive spreads! In this workshop students will weave a small reed basket in a traditional Polish tatza basket pattern. Usually made from willow, we will be using hand-dyed round reed in a small diameter for a lovely basket suitable for display and use with fruit, rolls, cookies and the like. Students will have a choice of colored reeds. Finished dimensions: 8.75” diameter, 2” high. These pieces make lovely gifts or additions to your home. Stars and Snowflakes
Spruce up your holiday decorating with these charming woven reed ornaments. In this two-hour workshop you will weave three different stars and snowflakes using natural or dyed reed in a variety of color choices, then secure them with waxed linen thread. Each with be finished with a ribbon hanger. Make for yourself or as a gift.
Upcycled T-Shirt Yarn Basket
Do you have some old t-shirts you no longer wear because they have a few holes or stains? Don’t throw them away! Turn them into yarn to make a funky yet sturdy, functional basket.
You will make yarn with your own old t-shirts and a basket base with clothesline. Then you will learn different patterns possible with the twining technique and how to make a rim to finish the basket. Finished dimensions will vary.
Twined
Tapestry
Weave a charming wall-hanging, place mat, or table decoration using materials you likely have on hand – old t-shirts and clothesline. No loom required! All you will need to get set up is a wooden dowel. Students will learn how to make yarn from their old t-shirts, setting up a warp, and twined weaving in a variety of patterns.
Embellished Mending
Stains and holes in your favorite garments don’t need to be a tragedy. Instead, view them as an opportunity to be creative as well as kind to your wallet and the environment by learning to mend in a variety of ways. Students will learn basic hand sewing and embroidery stitches, simple applique, and woven mending.
Flower Vase Basket
Learn some basket-making basics and create a lovely Japanese-style basket with a bud vase that is a perfect gift for any occasion. Choose from a range of hand-dyed rattan weavers in vibrant colors. You will weave a square base that is secured with twined reed, turn up your weavers in a sweeping curve and finish with waxed linen knots to fasten the groups of weavers around a small vase. The materials kit includes hand-dyed rattan spokes, a twining weaver, waxed linen, glass vase, and a weaving template. Finished size: 5” wide by 4” tall
Basketry with Found Materials: Coiling and Random Weave
For thousands of years, people have been making baskets with materials they found in the world around them. Now you can turn stuff you would normally recycle or trash into whimsical and home décor. Your imagination is the only limit – there is so much potential in things often thought of as useless. You will learn to assess your materials for the type of weaving technique most appropriate for them. You will be introduced to two basket weaving techniques – coiling and random weave. It is up to you whether you choose to make a basket, wall art, or sculpture.
